I was laughing with a friend the other day that me leaving technical writing was like the end of a long term relationship. The gravity of my impending career change has finally settled on me and I am finding myself incredibly at peace now that I've crossed the first month mile marker in my new career.
The
technical writing profession and I in recent years rarely saw eye to
eye on the state of things. While I maintained a membership in the
Society for Technical Communication, I never attended local or national
events, and a key element of my marketing as a consultant was that I
was a technical writer that was self-sufficient and could hold their
own. So as a couple, technical writing (as in the profession) and I
rarely ever spoke.
While I will continue to write in my new career, I am better off putting technical writing behind me because I grew and the profession did not grow.
"...because I grew and the profession did not grow."
I'd love to hear you discuss this a bit. Another blog post perhaps?
